Candidacy

Am I a Candidate for Revision Bariatric Surgery?

Candidacy for revision is individual and depends on operative history, current anatomy, weight pattern, symptoms, and overall health. This page outlines the factors a bariatric team commonly considers.

Factors commonly considered

  • Original procedure — sleeve, bypass, band, or other.
  • Years since surgery — short-term changes are evaluated differently than long-term patterns.
  • Weight pattern — lowest weight reached, current weight, rate of regain.
  • Symptoms — reflux, dysphagia, nausea, abdominal pain, hypoglycemia, dumping.
  • Comorbidities — diabetes status, hypertension, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease.
  • Medications — including GLP-1 use and history.
  • Behavioral and nutritional factors — eating patterns, supplementation, follow-up history.

What evaluation typically includes

  • Detailed medical and surgical history.
  • Upper endoscopy and/or contrast imaging when indicated.
  • Laboratory studies and nutritional assessment.
  • Behavioral review.
  • Discussion of options ranging from medical/behavioral support, to endoscopic revision, to surgical revision.
