Factors commonly considered
- Original procedure — sleeve, bypass, band, or other.
- Years since surgery — short-term changes are evaluated differently than long-term patterns.
- Weight pattern — lowest weight reached, current weight, rate of regain.
- Symptoms — reflux, dysphagia, nausea, abdominal pain, hypoglycemia, dumping.
- Comorbidities — diabetes status, hypertension, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease.
- Medications — including GLP-1 use and history.
- Behavioral and nutritional factors — eating patterns, supplementation, follow-up history.
What evaluation typically includes
- Detailed medical and surgical history.
- Upper endoscopy and/or contrast imaging when indicated.
- Laboratory studies and nutritional assessment.
- Behavioral review.
- Discussion of options ranging from medical/behavioral support, to endoscopic revision, to surgical revision.
